Rather than imposing a signature style of his own, Bradley and his team believe that a project is most successful when clients see themselves in the finished product. He finds inspiration in creating spaces that are informed by the unique history, personality and aspirations of each client.  The designs are often eclectic, curated with unexpected parings of new and vintage pieces from the studio’s vast international resources and local craftsmen.

Bradley’s architecturally oriented process addresses all aspects of interior design. This perspective is the foundation for his thoughtful interiors that balance spatial configuration, scale, proportion and light with curated palettes of materials, texture and color.

Bradley and his team work diligently from the onset of each project to establish the utmost level of trust between client and designer. They follow a clear, linear design process that provides complete transparency into the firm’s work, fees and furnishings procurement.  While his team has a strong focus on aesthetics, the work is equally pragmatic.  Bradley goes to great lengths to learn and address the unique requirements of his clients’ individual lifestyles.  This thoughtful, collaborative approach to design has been the cornerstone of his studio’s practice and ultimate success, often resulting in repeat work with most of his valued clients.

“Once in a blue moon, a client meets the perfect interior designer and, like Aristophanes’s ‘second half’ (for all of you Plato fans), they become inseparable.”

“Bradley Stephens looked to grand 1920’s banks and 18th century salons in designing a family home. The designer’s initial mood board featured images of terrazzo floors, tray ceilings, and metal inlays. From there, he began to layer on warmer elements like fine wools and velvets, contemporary art pieces, and a medley of antique and vintage furniture.”

“The heavy hitters call on rising star interior designer Bradley Stephens for a dose of glamour in their Hamptons abodes, having become one of the East End’s go-to interior designers. There is no doubt his ability to move seamlessly between vastly different aesthetics has become Stephens’s calling card, and ultimately his recipe for success.”

A FAMILY AFFAIR
“Two families building one house could have been a recipe for disaster—arguments over the layout, jostling for space and privacy, a bifurcated aesthetic. But it turned out to be a pleasurable challenge for a pair of sisters who sought an elegant, comfortable, and practical escape from the city.”

“We talked through the sequence of the home, area by area,” says Stephens, who probed the families’ functional needs along with their aspirations and what their previous homes had lacked. “I liken it to writing a novel about their lives in this new place,” he explains. “That was the foundation, so before we made one decision or stepped into the first showroom, we knew all about their preferences.”

"Bradley Stephens has a country home, Rockwater, in New Preston, which is a testament to his extraordinary talent. Since establishing his own interior-design firm in 2003, he has created many high-profile interiors and has become one of the most sought-after designers in the business. He is able to combine artisan finishes and high-end craftsmanship with a sense of tasteful lived-in luxury."

“The views from Harbor’s Edge include a labyrinth of picturesque docks, silvery waters, and a birds-eye view of a sky painted with fiery pastels at sunset. Adding to the allure of the project are interiors designed by Bradley Stephens of Stephens Design Group, who has designed homes for such high-profile clients as Anderson Cooper and Soledad O'Brien. A sense of world travel can be seen in the midcentury, vintage, and contemporary furnishings. No detail has been overlooked.”

“Stephens set to work stripping away the darkness, trading layers of somber paint for white Venetian plaster walls and ebonized floors. Piece by piece, they reintroduced things that held personal significance. They put down new roots without destroying the old. They made it a home.”

DESIGNER FRIDAY: BRADLEY STEPHENS
"Bradley Stephens began his career with a bang; one of his first commissions was an interior design commission for anchorman Anderson Cooper’s penthouse. Since opening his own Manhattan firm in 2003, Stephens has contributed fifteen years of newsworthy interiors from seaside Maine hotels to sophisticated high-rises on Central Park West.”

“The concept of “design trend” makes me cringe! Our firm’s mantra is ‘timeless, beautiful and functional’– so the big trend today isn’t necessarily our focus. I find inspiration in creating spaces that are informed by the unique history, personalities, and aspirations of our clients – no matter ‘what’s hot and what’s not.’ One thing I do appreciate about trends is that they often put a spotlight on underappreciated colors, materials or patterns – both vintage and modern – that deserve their moment in the sun.”

“Clients praise Stephens’s hands-on approach and extremely full-service mentality. It is said that he goes to every meeting and visits each job site at least once a week. Stephens’s extremely loyal client base is reflected in his repeat projects. He has done more than one project for more than half of his clients, and for many he has done three of their homes.”

“Stephens is said to be meticulous on budget, and gives clients an item-by-item, room-by-room “recipe” for their home with high-priced and low-priced options for everything. Said to be a big believer in the philosophy of “the Gap skirt with the Prada jacket,” we hear that Stephens is a designer who understands how to prioritize spending. One satisfied client told us, ‘Bradley is a rising star and I feel so lucky to have found him before he inevitably gets inundated with clients.’”

“Bradley is always available and to this day when there is an issue, he deals with it immediately.”

“We live in a building with summer work rules and Bradley was able to get the job done while sticking to these rules.”

“My favorite element is the lighting design. Bradley custom built the chandeliers and lights. Whenever anyone walks into the house, they comment on how wonderful the lighting is.”

“He really understood functionality. There are lots of kids in my home, and he used all stain-resistant fabrics in the family rooms. You’d never know they are stain resistant though, because the fabrics are so beautiful.”

“So full service, nothing too small for him. He even made sure we had the right toilet paper!”

“He created a working manual for the house that our housekeeper can use.”

“There’s nothing Bradley thinks cannot be corrected.”

“My favorite part was that it was a true collaboration. Working with Bradley was a highly personal and collaborative experience.”

“People come into my home and tell me how much it looks like me!”

“Bradley Stephens drew the club-like palette of the master sitting room from the natural tones of the seaside. Grass cloth wallcoverings, a chevron-patterned ceiling, and a seagrass rug evoke the timeworn, gray-brown tones of driftwood and weathered shingles, providing a backdrop that welcomes a mix of modern furniture forms.”
